The Top 10 Highest Mountains In The World

The top 10 highest mountains in the world are all located in Central and South Asia, specifically within the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. They are all "eight-thousanders," meaning they exceed 8,000 meters in height.

1. Mount Everest

  • Height: 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet)

  • Location: Nepal/China border

  • Key Details: Known as the "Roof of the World," it is the highest point on Earth. It was first successfully summited in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. In Nepal, it is called Sagarmatha, and in Tibet, it is known as Chomolungma.

2. K2 (Mount Godwin-Austen)

  • Height: 8,611 meters (28,251 feet)

  • Location: Pakistan/China border

  • Key Details: Nicknamed the "Savage Mountain," K2 is widely considered much more difficult and dangerous to climb than Everest. It has a high fatality-to-summit ratio and was only successfully summited in winter for the first time in 2021.

3. Kangchenjunga

  • Height: 8,586 meters (28,169 feet)

  • Location: Nepal/India border

  • Key Details: Until 1852, it was thought to be the highest mountain in the world. Its name means "The Five Treasures of Snow," referring to its five distinct peaks. Many climbers stop just short of the actual summit out of respect for local religious beliefs that the peak is sacred.

4. Lhotse

  • Height: 8,516 meters (27,940 feet)

  • Location: Nepal/China border

  • Key Details: Lhotse is connected to Mount Everest via the South Col. Because of this proximity, it is often overshadowed by its neighbor, but it features the "Lhotse Face," a massive wall of blue ice that is one of the most technical parts of the Everest climbing route.

5. Makalu

  • Height: 8,485 meters (27,838 feet)

  • Location: Nepal/China border

  • Key Details: Located just 19 km southeast of Everest, Makalu is famous for its perfect pyramid-shaped summit. It is an isolated peak and is considered one of the most difficult 8,000-meter mountains to climb due to its steep ridges.

6. Cho Oyu

  • Height: 8,188 meters (26,864 feet)

  • Location: Nepal/China border

  • Key Details: Its name means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan. It is generally considered the "easiest" of the 8,000-meter peaks because the slopes are less steep, making it a popular choice for climbers preparing for Everest.

7. Dhaulagiri I

  • Height: 8,167 meters (26,795 feet)

  • Location: Nepal

  • Key Details: Dhaulagiri means "White Mountain." It is the highest mountain located entirely within a single country (Nepal). It rises abruptly from the Kali Gandaki River, creating one of the deepest gorges in the world.

8. Manaslu

  • Height: 8,163 meters (26,781 feet)

  • Location: Nepal

  • Key Details: Known as the "Mountain of the Spirit," its name comes from the Sanskrit word Manasa, meaning "soul" or "intellect." It was first climbed by a Japanese expedition in 1956, and it remains a popular but avalanche-prone peak.

9. Nanga Parbat

  • Height: 8,126 meters (26,660 feet)

  • Location: Pakistan

  • Key Details: Nicknamed the "Killer Mountain," it is famous for its massive Rupal Face, which rises 4,600 meters (15,090 feet) in a single sheer wall. It was notoriously dangerous to climb before modern equipment and weather forecasting.

10. Annapurna I

  • Height: 8,091 meters (26,545 feet)

  • Location: Nepal

  • Key Details: Annapurna I was the first 8,000-meter peak to ever be summited (in 1950). Despite being the 10th highest, it is statistically the most dangerous mountain in the world to climb, with the highest fatality rate among all the eight-thousanders.
