The Titan Submersible

 


The Titan submersible was a deep-sea exploration vehicle designed and operated by OceanGate, an American privately-owned company specializing in manned submersible technology. It gained widespread attention following a catastrophic failure during a dive to the Titanic wreck site in June 2023.

Falcon 9 Rocket




Falcon 9 is a two-stage launch vehicle powered by liquid oxygen (LOX) and rocket-grade kerosene (RP-1). The vehicle is designed, built and operated by SpaceX.

Falcon 9 can be flown with a fairing or with a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. All first- and second-stage vehicle systems are the same in the two configurations; only the payload interface to the second stage changes between the fairing and Dragon configurations.



Falcon 9 was updated in the summer of 2015 to a Full Thrust configuration from its previous v1.1 configuration (flown from 2013 – summer 2015). Falcon 9 underwent further updates and first flew its Full Thrust Block 5 configuration in spring 2018. The Falcon 9 Block 5 architecture focused on improving performance, reliability, and life of the vehicle, as well as ensuring the vehicle’s ability to meet critical government crewed and non-crewed mission requirements. Engine performance on both stages was improved, releasing additional thrust capability. Thermal protection shielding was modified to support rapid recovery and refurbishment. Avionics designs, thrust structures, and other components were upgraded for commonality, reliability, and performance.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

 


The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. It was declared as one of the seven wonders of the world because of its uniqueness. But behind that famous trend lies a fascinating history, including looted wealth, soft underbelly, hundreds of years of engineering missteps and one proud Italian dictator. If you've ever wondered how the most famous architectural disaster in history happened, it's the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The maximum height of the tower is 183.3 feet. Weight is 16,200 tons. There are 296 steps to the top.

The current inclination of the tower is 3.99 degrees. Taking into account the weight and height of the tower, physicists have said that the maximum angle before the tower would fall would be 5.44 degrees (the tower had once tilted at 5.5 degrees.) Uneven foundations on soft soil caused the tilting. It took 199 years to complete the tower. Construction began in 1173 but was not completed until 1372. That's because the construction had to be stopped several times.

The tower was built in the 12th century to display the wealth gained from wars and looting. Like any prosperous medieval Italian city, Pisa began to invest its new wealth in the construction of large buildings. In 1063 the city government needed a place to display all the treasures brought back from Sicily, and they decided to build a “Field of miracles” with a cathedral, a baptistery, a cemetery and a bell tower.

The name "Pisa" comes from the Greek word for "marsh", so the architects here did not have to take the subsoil into account when building a very tall tower. By giving the tower a shallow and relatively heavy base, they unwittingly doomed it from the start. But the tower began to sink on one side when the second floor was constructed. Unfortunately, by then, it is too late to turn back. As construction continued, the builders tried to reconcile their mistake by adding higher pillars and arches on the south side of the tower. But when they reached the fourth floor (of the planned 8), they found the south side arches two inches higher than those on the north, but the tower continued to lean. Not knowing what to do next, builders stopped construction for nearly a century.

20th century dictator Benito Mussolini was embarrassed by the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He considered its faulty construction and subsequent demolition a national disgrace and a disgrace to Italy's reputation. So he set about correcting many of the things that he saw as Italy's shortcomings. The idea was to dig hundreds of holes at the base of the tower and pump grout using ballast. But it didn't go well. The result was that it became more sticky than it already was.



The tower, which survived for years, was found to be stable for another 200 years. In 1987, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was declared a World Heritage Site and the entire complex has been under UNESCO since then.

Tesla Cyber Truck

It’s been four years since Elon Musk first pulled the covers off the Cybertruck concept, and now it’s finally here. A handful of lucky customers picked up their (likely digital) keys on 30 November, however the majority of people will be waiting long into 2024 and beyond to park a Cybertruck on their drive.


Elon Musk has confirmed high quality 300 series stainless steel as their engineering team’s material of choice for the Cybertruck.It’s corrosion resistant, strong and affordable – that’s why the Tesla Cybertruck team chose a stainless-steel alloy to create the Cybertruck exoskeleton.

Tesla.com describes the new vehicle as … “built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass.”

According to matmatch.com, “The Cybertruck exoskeleton is made from Tesla’s own stainless steel alloy, referred to as the Ultra-hard 30X Cold-rolled Stainless Steel. While the blend is proprietary, Elon mentioned during the product launch that the exoskeleton material of the vehicle is the same as the SpaceX Starship shell.”


The material impacted both the design and the manufacturing process for the vehicle. More from matmatch.com: “Besides the material used in the Cybertruck, Musk clarified that Tesla went with the planar design as a result of the cold-rolled 30X stainless steel’s capability to break a stamping press. Whether that statement is said in layman’s terms or the material is indeed too hard for pressing, the key implication is that Tesla would have to devise a new body manufacturing method that does not apply standard automotive manufacturing techniques.

“Musk has shared that the body panels will be laser cut and that standard stamping was not implemented in the Cybertruck prototype. Besides the impact on aesthetics, this new body manufacturing method will provide Tesla the flexibility to adjust, reduce cost, and improve manufacturing time with its simple flat panel design.”


Another reason Tesla is using steel innovation is to save millions on its Cybertruck program. According to WardsAuto:

“With the flat panels and straight lines, the automaker doesn’t need stamping dies to shape the body panels, or even blanking dies to form steel blanks. They can waterjet or laser-cut the panels to size and even cut out the window openings this way.

“Other standard tooling such as hemming dies won’t be necessary either. All Tesla will need is a simple break press to crease and fold the panels to the proper shape.

“The body is an exoskeleton, which is to say, the body panels are welded together to form the structure of the truck. This is not body-on-frame construction like a conventional pickup truck, nor a collection of panels bolted and welded into a unitized body shell like a typical car or crossover. Instead, it’s a different way of constructing a vehicle, which no other major automaker has ever done.

Things remain just as angular down the side, with this silhouette making the Cybertruck look a bit like an axe head on wheels. Speaking of the wheels they’re 20-inches in diameter, although they look smaller than this thanks to the gigantic tyres, and the aero wheel covers look exactly the same as the concept’s. All Cybertrucks will be delivered in this bare metal finish, although Tesla has just launched two wrap options which you can have fitted at a dealer for $6,500 (just over £5,000). There are just two to choose from though: matte black or white.

The new Tesla Cybertruck currently starts from $79,990 (£66,000) for a dual-motor car with all-wheel-drive, rising to $99,990 (£82,000) if you want the ‘Cyberbeast’ version with three motors and 845hp. That’s almost $20,000 more than originally promised in 2019, or over £15,000.

If that seems a bit rich for you, a rear-wheel drive version will be available in 2025 costing $60,990 (£50,000). You do have a hit in terms of range though, with it managing 250 miles on a charge compared to the 340 miles the dual-motor car can do.
